Taking Bear Dens Outside

After reading Hibernation Station by Michelle Meadows and Sleepy Bears by Mem Fox, the two Kindergarten classes and I went for a walk to city park to make bear dens.

Students could work in pars or individually to make a bear den for winter. Each student was given two plastic bears (from the math manipulatives bins) and was encouraged to find building materials from the around park area.

Soft items such as leaves and grass lined the den floors. Sticks, pinecones, wood chips, and rocks made up the walls and ceilings.
